Montreal-based studio Architecturama recently designed a whimsical cube-shaped home with a turquoise staircase running along its exterior. While stairs serve a functional purpose, they are rarely the focal point in a given space. However, this home turns the staircase into a unique design element that connects the indoor and outdoor spaces.
The Lake Jasper House is a rural retreat located on a wooded hillside in the town of Chertsey, Quebec. The home consist of three cubic storeys, each of which is connected by a turquoise staircase that runs alongside the home's exterior wall. On the top floor the staircase turns 90 degrees and penetrates the inside of the home. The same pattern is then repeated inside with a series of modular benches that can be used as tables, seats and even room partitions. As the architects explain, "The goal was to have a present, living and enthusiastic architecture that engages the senses."
