The Hyundai Motor Group recently used VR technology to help an elderly man travel to North Korea. In 1947, Kim Gu-Hyeon escaped North Korea and settled in South Korea. After the Korean War ended, boundaries were drawn between the two countries and Kim was never able to return home again.
In order to help Kim see his hometown one more time, the Hyundai Motor Group teamed up 'VWorld.' VWorld is the South Korean government’s multi-dimensional terrain visualization technology and it involves using virtually reality to recreate different experiences. By using Kim's recollections about his hometown, the Hyundai engineers were able to use the technology to recreate the village digitally. To make the experience more realistic, the engineers drove Kim towards the Demilitarized Zone and then projected an image of his drive to the North Korean village of his childhood. Although Kim did not actually travel to North Korea, the video gave Kim a way to visualize his most precious memories.
The project demonstrates how VR technology can be used to recreate different memories and experiences.
