Totora is a grass that's thick, hollow and can usually be found growing along the sides of lakes around the Andes Mountains in South America. This plant has been used year after year to construct houses, flooring and boats. Taking inspiration from this versatile material, architect and designer Juan Fernando Hidalgo Cordero has come up with another way that the plant can be used, in furniture design.
As a tabletop, the reeds of the totora plant are ideal for keeping drinkware upright, since it it still lightweight enough to me pushed down by the objects. This material is also ideal for making seating, especially since it so easily conforms to fit the shape of whoever is sitting upon it.
