Swirling Sand Drawings

Tony Plant Creates Temporary Artworks on English Beaches

Tony Plant, an environmentalist artist hailing from Newquay, England, creates temporary works of arts on breathtakingly scenic beaches of his native country. Using nothing more than the standard garden rake, Tony Plant makes strong swirling strokes in the sand to create patterns that could be likened to crop circles. Of course, he will not be mistaken for an alien.

Careful to ensure that each beach canvas is created below the tidal zones where the sand is flatter and wetter, Tony Plant is able to ensure a greater contrast between the top of the surface and his own geometric markings. Although Tony Plant's artworks last only for a matter of hours before the next incoming tide wipes it away, they show that interacting with nature can be purely in the moment.
