Originally a dwelling that mixed the style of Yanjang and Huizhou, the Tongling Recluse sits in a secluded village in the southern part of Anhui Province. The entire property is surrounded by weeds, with the existing home situation at the top of the mountain peak.
The new structure was designed to resemble the classic home, using similar materials and floor plans. Using a traditional folding roof, the center of the home is streamlined to reflect Taoist culture with black tiles to blend into the rest of the architecture in the area. The main space was designed to resemble a gallery with large windows looking out onto the delicate brickwork and lush greenery.
The Tongling Recluse is a modernized old structure that pulls together the best of traditional architecture with futuristic design.
