The Platypus was designed by François-Alexandre Bertrand, who founded the French innovation think tank l'idéothèque and Philippe Roulin, a naval architect. The craft sits about 5 feet underwater and is propelled via two electric engines mounted in each pontoon that have an eight-hour battery life; it has a max speed of 10 to 12 knots while the craft is above water and 3 to 4 knots while it's underwater. If you need to surface for any reason, the whole craft can come up in 40 seconds flat. An interesting feature of this design is its included air tanks, which have hoses that reach nearly 50 feet to let you explore your immediate surroundings.
The designers have put a patent on the Playtpus and plan to build a prototype sometime soon. A design like this seems like a great way to explore the wonders of the ocean without polluting them into oblivion.
