The project was co-founded by San Francisco-based bartender Mark Goodwin with service professionals in the Bay Area and works by having supporters purchase a pin that they can then wear when around alcohol. This could be done on a daily or sporadic basis for whatever reason to let others around them know they won't be consuming any alcohol to encourage respect from colleagues and patrons alike. Proceeds from sales of the $15 pins go towards connecting bar workers in need of help with mental and substance abuse professionals.
'The Pin Project' was explained in a statement that said, "This decision to wear a pin and not drink is to be respected, unquestioned and understood. It can be donned for any reason; this server needs to drive home, this host is on antibiotics, this barback only drinks once a week, or this manager struggles with substances.For any reason at all, the pin can help assert confidence, help with a social cue, or with promoting the best possible version of this person to the thirsty folks on the other side of the bar."
