Earth scientists warn that the Pacific Northwest is long overdue for a catastrophic earthquake, and TCF Architects has taken pains to mitigate the impact of that imminent disaster with its new gymnasium. Tasked with building an elementary school, TCF Architects designed the school's gym so that it could keep a large group of people safe in the event of a severe tsunami.
Though the architecture and engineering required for keeping a structure safe from tsunamis has the potential to be unattractively utilitarian, TCF Architects made sure to design the structure such that it was still befitting of an elementary school. For instance, they gave the gym and the rest of the school buildings gabled roofs, a traditional feature that is common in the surrounding area.
