Wilkinson King Architects designed the Sussex House for a London-based couple searching for a rural getaway in the English countryside.
The home features red cedar cladding and a roof with a folded silhouette, intended to emulate the hilly surroundings. The owners wanted the home to have as much as a relationship with the landscape as possible, and the roof was but one of many features that engaged with the site in this way. Made from cross-laminated timber panels, the roof responds to the hills in the distance, while the minimal grey material aligns with the colors of the sky above.
The red cladding of the upper storey was, again, chosen to respond to the site's natural context; specifically, the changing seasonal colors of the neighboring meadows and trees.
