There is a plethora of possible applications (like camping) for the Sunshine Lamp, but the designers from Zhejiang University had the underprivileged population in mind particularly. Considering the common practice in poorer areas of Africa and Asia of lighting kerosene lamps, an alternative solution has been suggested.
Chen Rujia, Wang Yong, He Yuxiao, Zhang Hanyang and Xu Yangjie won a 2013 Red Dot Design Award for this proposal. It's a collapsible and eco-friendly light fixture what has solar panels on one side. Push it through a hole in the wall to allow the cells to absorb the sun's rays. This energy will be converted into warm light, escaping inside from the translucent material of the Sunshine Lamp's middle. The fixture can be flattened and capped to save power.
