The First-Graders at Elm Street Elementary School Make and Sell Sugar Scrubs

Lemon, peppermint and lavender are a few of the types of scented sugar scrubs prepared by Sugar Kids Beauty. Rather than coming from a studio or a factory, these cosmetic products are made by Melanie Arrington's first grade class at Elm Street Elementary School.

In addition to teaching the first grade classroom the fundamentals of growing natural ingredients like aloe that are used in the beauty products, the classroom-run business also provides an introduction to research, development, entrepreneurship and social media. Each sugar scrub will be sold for about $10 and profits will be donated to local charities.

Sugar Kids Beauty is able to operate thanks to a $1,000 grant from a start-up that invests in student-operated businesses.
