An assuming Dutch town called Zuidhoek-Nieuwkoop has become the very first jurisdiction in the world to be outfitted with special, high-tech streetlights that are designed to avoid disrupting the behavior of bats.
Developed by Signify, these streetlights make use of red LEDs with Philips' in-house Clearfield technology. Studies have previously managed to show that these lights don't disturb bats because their red wavelengths are perceived as darkness by bats, unlike green and white lights, which are disturbing to the furry, flying mammals.
The town of Zuidhoek-Nieuwkoop was chosen as the testing ground for these streetlights because it's known to be frequented by rare bat species. The success of this venture means that these red LED lights could be used in other towns to ensure that bats aren't disturbed by human lighting needs.
