The Warming Huts v. 2014 competition has attracted some intriguing entries and the Stalactite Pavilion is one of them. This is a relatively small structure that's intended for placement directly on an outdoor ice skating rink, on a frozen river or lake, and it serves the purposes of playground and refuge alike.
APTUM Architecture assembled the shelter from CNC-milled corrugated cardboard, composing a large rectangular prism that appears to have had vault-shaped voids excised. Several arches on all sides of the Stalactite Pavilion invite direct entry on one's very blades, welcoming children and adults through doorways of various heights. Inside, the downward-dangling cave-like projections hold oil lamps. These provide radiant heat and a warm orange glow. The temporary building serves for play and comfort.
