Spain’s Tomatina Fest Draws in People of All Backgrounds

Spain’s Tomatina Fest drew in over 40,000 people to the village of Buñol. The annual event is on its 64th year and gathered over 100 tons of tomatoes for the festivities this year.

The photos that have emerged from the event are truly epic. People are shown carelessly being splashed by tomatoes and engaging in what can only be described as the world’s biggest food fight.

Originating in 1945 as a criminal activity, tomatoes were thrown at cops as burglars escaped from a brawl. As more and more participants got involved on a semi-regular basis, the event became popular and official rules were put into place to make the event safer and more inclusive as an annual event that everyone could participate in. For an hour from 11AM until 12PM people pound one another with tomatoes in great fun.
