Fluidless Scent-Releasing Facemasks

Hong Kong Researchers Developed a Smart Mask Using Wax Pads

Virtual reality (VR) is a technology that immerses users in simulated environments, but it usually only stimulates the senses of sight, sound, and touch. However, a team of researchers at City University of Hong Kong led by Xinge Yu has developed a smart face mask that can release different scents on demand, making VR more realistic and multisensory.

The face mask is equipped with a wireless chip that communicates with a computer via Bluetooth. It contains nine cells filled with liquid perfumes and paraffin, which can be heated to release various smells when triggered by the VR software. The mask can also combine different scents to create new ones, such as coffee or chocolate. The scents are delivered close to the nose, so the user can detect them within 1.5 seconds of activation.

The face mask can enhance VR experiences by adding an olfactory dimension, such as smelling flowers in a garden or food in a kitchen. It can also be used to mimic the odor of absent loved ones during virtual meetings, or to create therapeutic effects by releasing relaxing or stimulating scents
