Intimate Hand Portraits

The 'Skin' Series Examines the Human Condition Through Our Hands

Artist Kim Anderson's 'Skin' series captures the human condition through intricate illustrations of hands. Skin examines a lifetime of experiences through the wrinkles and scars in the hands of the old and middle-aged. Each piece explores a different individual or group of subjects and their hands. Anderson used ink pens and large swaths of Japanese paper to create her masterpieces.

Each illustration in the Skin series was named using numbers. Anderson chose to use the ages of her subjects in an effort to emphasize how the artworks explore life experiences. According to the artist, hands are "stretching, shrivelling, creasing and cracking as we move through the stages of our lives, it serves as a topographical map of everything that has ever happened to us."
