As part of a collaboration with the nonprofit Michigan Urban Farming Initiative, General Motors Detroit will be building a compact shipping container house. The small abode is set to measure a total of 320 square feet, with room for two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen.
As well as repurposing a shipping container as the body of the house, GM's Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant will be donating tons of materials that will be reused in the interior, putting items like sound-deadening vehicle insulation to work as wall insulation and shipping container plywood as paneling.
The shipping container home will be assembled by GM employees and skilled volunteers and once it has been completed, the house will be relocated to an urban garden owned by Michigan Urban Farming Initiative in Detroit’s New Center neighborhood.
