A group of researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel have invented a pair of pressure-monitoring smart socks that are designed for use by diabetics.
Diabetics often suffer from reduced feeling in their feet. This can result in them developing ulcers and even more serious injuries that sometimes lead to amputations. The smart socks help mitigate this possibility through the use of special micro-fabricated pressure sensors. When the sensors detect excessive pressure in a particular area of the foot, they detect the wearer on their smartphone and tell the user how to change their posture or otherwise correct the situation.
These smart socks could ultimately help diabetics get a little bit of peace of mind by helping them know what steps to take to prevent foot injury or amputation.
