Thriving Outdoor Throws

The Seed Blanket is a Portable Lawn That Serves as a Green Urban Overlay

In the concrete-covered metropolis, it can be difficult to introduce plant life. The Seed Blanket is a solution to this problem of sealed-over soil, offering lush green leaves that can grow just about anywhere. This, however, is not the sort of garden that you sew in one spot, for this imaginative product is an independent rug that contains the roots of its photosynthesizing fibers.

Designed by Cristobal Barff Delfau, Gaby Hooper and Dror Kaspi, the project was shortlisted at the 2012 James Dyson Awards. Its unique biodegradable material is manufactured to a flexible grid, each with crisscrossing creases that form triangular turf units. The thick blades of grass grow up from between the burlap-like fabric, requiring some sun and water but never soiling its surroundings with dirt, because it doesn't contain any.
