You may have never thought you’d be staring at a picture of a doll head transplanted onto a chicken’s body, but thanks to Sarah Williams, that awkward scenario has been actualized. Using deli meats as muses, Williams’ body of work is comprised of idiosyncratic pictures that convey the butchered animals in a new and sometimes disturbing light. Again, seeing a room filled with chickens hanging with nooses around their necks wasn’t something I thought I’d ever see, but Sarah Williams made it happen.
She explains that she enjoys photographing dead objects to confront viewers with the finality that everyone faces. She also wants to get audiences thinking about their personal relationship and society’s relationship with animals. Her images certainly are powerful and may even convert some to veganism.
