SAPER explosives recognition software is like a real-life version of Minesweeper -- only with real-life consequences.
Developed by the Military University of Technology in Warsaw, the application was developed to detect landmines and other unexploded weapons lingering just out of sight.
Using a mechanism that detects disturbances in the magnetic field, the application can seek out 40 different types of explosive materials from a distance of 30 cm away. While that may requiring that the person be too close to avoid an unfortunate accident, it does have the potential to deter a least a few close calls from becoming fatal.
The app sends out a warning message when the potentially harmful material is detected, as well as providing a synopsis of what it could be and providing the ability to alert authorities who can then safely dispose of the device.
