Studio on the Rye is a design studio based in London's Peckham area and it is responsible for the side extension at the Rusty House. It is a space that is entirely clad in a rust-tonal Corten steel which is added to the terraced home first built in the 50s. This gives it a reddish-brown exterior and is built for a client who resided in Peckham for 14 years.
The director of the Studio on the Rye, Sarah Borowiecka speaks about the design process to Dezeen, noting "The scale and form of the extension matches that of the host building, but the interpretation is modern, simple and monolithic, with shadow gaps in both the walls and roof helped delineate the extension from the original house. The elevations on the two streets follow the angle of the roads, so passers by are never looking at the side of the development, always at the front."
