The Rubble Bucket Challenge Aims to Spread Awareness About Gaza

The Rubble Bucket Challenge is an awareness campaign that aims to raise awareness about desperate living conditions in the Gaza Strip. The campaign has taken off on Twitter via the #rubblebucketchallenge hashtag.

The campaign is of course a spin-off of the wildly popular Ice Bucket Challenge, where people dump buckets of icy water on their heads to raise awareness about ALS.

The first Rubble Bucket Challenge video was posted by Palestinian journalist Ayman Al Aloul. Al Aloul says he could not justify using water for the challenge due to the stark water shortages plaguing Gaza, and the widespread lack of electricity required to freeze water. The use of rubble is also symbolic, with many houses and business in the Gaza Strip reduced to rubble in the wake of persistent bombings.

The Rubble Bucket Challenge is targeted towards "all people who sympathize with the Palestinian people."
