Paper-Thin Stone Lampshades

The 'Rock Collection' Features Lampshades Made from Natural Shale

The 'Rock Collection' is a series by 13 & 9, an Austrian design firm, in collaboration with Wever & Ducre. With the goal of adapting and repurposing materials for tasks that go beyond their original intentions, the Rock Collection's most impressive feat is the creation of stone lampshades.

The rounded lampshades are made from naturally sourced shale, an abundant type of rock often used for things like tabletops but rarely for something as delicate as a lampshade. The benefit of using shale is that the rock is composed of strong, thin layers. Using this quality, 13 & 9 created razor-thin veneers that are lightweight enough to rest on wooden supports and translucent enough to allow some light to get through.

The unique shades come in three different colors, making them adaptable to different rooms.
