A group of scientists and researchers working out of the University of Warsaw in Poland have developed a high-tech robotic caterpillar that is unique in that it draws on plentiful external light as its energy source.
This robotic caterpillar makes liberal use of special polymer materials that are influenced by changes in light and illumination, allowing them to be controlled by laser-directed light. This property allows the robot to maintain a soft structure, making it robustly durable in a wide range of environments. Measuring in at just over half an inch, this robot is capable of squeezing into extremely small and narrow spaces.
Not only is this robot eco-friendly, but its ability to combine a very small size with a soft structure means that it promises applications in a wide array of contexts ranging from heavy engineering to scientific exploration.
