Water-Monitoring Robotic Swans

These Robot Swans Help Provide Data-Driven Water Testing

A team from the National University of Singapore has begun testing specially designed robot swans that will help scientists monitor water conditions and facilitate efficient water testing. While the 'NUSwans' may look like floating avian decorations, they actually function as a valuable form of data collection.

Currently researchers collect water samples via boat. However, this process is labor-intensive and time consuming. The NUSwans help make water sampling more efficient by collecting real-time data about water conditions such as pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll. The robot swans then wirelessly transmit this information back to researchers through the cloud. Based on this information, researchers can easily determine if there is a problem with the water quality.

The robot swans are currently being tested in the Singapore’s Pandan Reservoir and thus far they have proved an efficient and unobtrusive means of collecting water quality data.
