'PaperID' is the name of a new RFID paper technology developed by Disney Research, plus the University of Washington and Carnegie Mellon University.
When an RFID tag is adhered, printed or drawn on a piece of paper, the technology gives paper the ability to "sense" gesture commands. This means that a person waves their hand, touches the paper or interrupts the signal, algorithms are able to identify specific movements and respond accordingly to them. As an example, moving a hand over a tag on a pop-up book has the potential to activate a particular sound.
This technology has the possibility to enhance everything from simple paper toys to low-tech marketing materials in a way that's highly cost-effective.
