The Reading Cabin is a miniature, mobile library created by Portuguese artist Marta Wengorovius and architect Francisco Aires Mateus. The cabin is meant to hold only one person at a time and is minimalist in its design. A skylight lets in sunlight and a raised wooden platform and one shelf are the only pieces of furniture.
The Reading Cabin is stocked with 60 books chosen by 20 people who Wengorovius invited to be a part of the project. The library must be reserved in advance to be used and time slots range from an hour to an entire day. Designers around the world have responded to the reduction in availability of public spaces (parks, libraries, etc...) by creating mobile and low-cost alternatives. It may not be long before the only place to check out a book is in a Reading Cabin.
