General Electric and Tata Consultancy Services have partnered up to introduce a new piece of technology into GE's Predix operating system: smart LEDs. The smart LEDs in the Predix system will be used specifically for gas turbine manufacturing, and they will provide critical analytics, saving time and costs during the manufacturing process.
When manufacturing gas turbines, precision is important. One area in which precision matters is temperature -- workers assembling and stacking rotor wheels can only begin an operation once the rotors have reached a certain temperature, and even slight variances can result in multiple weeks of shipment delays. The new Predix smart LEDs can monitor temperature with much greater efficiency and accuracy, ensuring that rotor stacking is completed correctly.
As with all aspects of the Predix operating system, data from the LEDs will be fed into the cloud and used to further improve processes.
