Enigmatic Girlhood Portraits

Betina Du Toit Photographs a "Portrait of a Girl" for C-Heads

South African photographer Betina du Toit sought to show us a "Portrait of a Girl" with her latest series, shot exclusively for C-Heads.

The Cape Town-based photographer explains that good photography, to her, means "work that reflects a sense of truth which we can relate to on some level." The less smoke and mirrors, she explains, the better. That's why her subjects -- Amanda Leemis, Malin Akerstorm, Alex Glenday, Catherine Lehmann and Julia Campbell-Gillies -- all feature understated hair and makeup by Anne Timper.

Toit's final images are soft and tender, with an ethereal, almost dream-like quality to them. Without the "smoke and mirrors," Toit is able to better explore femininity, and the transition it undergoes as girlhood turns into womanhood.
