A company called Blueforce Development is developing a sensor that alerts police when their police dogs (K-9s) experience dangerously high body temperatures. The 'K9 Life Safety Bundle' comes with a sensor that is surgically implanted into the dog and sends data on its internal body temperature to a receiver attached to the animal's external gear.
If the dog's temperature drops below or rises above a pre-selected value, the data is transmitted using any available WiFi, 3G, 4G or LTE connection to a cloud server. From there, a warning notification is sent to the iOS or Android device of the police or handler of the dog in question.
Overheating is a widespread problem in police K9 units, and is responsible for as many police dog deaths as gunshots.
