A UK company called Raepak recently launched a Biopolymer sugarcane plastic alternative. Companies using plastics such as HDPE, PET and PVC can now look at a straightforward solution. Making the switch to Biopolymer has caused many questions and the main one seems to be about product shelf life. Biodegradable alternatives simply won't store countless liquid types and many companies won't be successful having products manufactured with a short shelf life.
Biopolymer has the same benefits as HDPE, PET and PVC plastic. All these plastic types use ethanol in the manufacturing process. Normally, a manufacturer of plastic will extract the ethanol from oil and use it to make plastic. As ethanol can also be extracted from sugar cane, the elimination of using oil is achieved.
Extracting oil from the ground is a huge process and one that impacts the local and global environment by increasing carbon emissions. Using sugar cane lowers this impact because the materials are renewable. Biopolymer plastic can also be made with recycled plastic. Post consumer resin (PRC) is a blend of reclaimed and recycled HDPE plastic. This is mixed with Biopolymer plastic which is a cheaper process.
The art of recycling plastic, while using PRC, is on the rise. More companies that use plastic need to get on board with alternative solutions. Raepak offers 100% Biopolymer bottles and 50% Biopolymer with 50% PRC. This will help with the demand on choosing a plastic alternative.
