The California Assembly has voted to ban single-use plastic grocery bags from stores. The bill, which has to be approved by the state Senate, requires shoppers to carry reusable totes or pay a minimum of five cents for a paper bag containing partially recycled materials. Plastic bag bans have already been enacted in some California cities.
If the ban becomes law, California will be the first U.S. state to ban plastic grocery bags altogether. Plastic bag bans in California are no small thing since Californians use 19 billion plastic bags, or approximately 552 bags per person annually.
