Planted-Powered Lamps

This 'Plant Lamp' Utilizes Microorganisms to illuminate

Developed by a team of researchers at the Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología (UTEC) in Peru, the 'Plant Lamp' is designed to be powered off of the microorganisms found in the soil surrounding a plant.

Utilizing an LED illumination system that provides ample light, the 'Plant Lamp' can operate for two hours per day, which might seem low, but could provide a sutainable, eco-friendly option for those who don't have direct access to electricity or that can't afford it.

Describing the process behind the 'Plant Lamp,' professor of Energy and Power Engineering at UTEC Elmer Ramirez explains: "We put the plant and soil into a wooden plant pot together with a previously established and properly protected irrigation system. Then, inside the pot we place the energy generation system that we created which stores soil and electrodes capable of converting plant nutrients into electric energy."
