French designer Pierre Charpin has had a storied career since he began designing objects and furniture in the early 1990s. His widespread success has led the Grand-Hornu of Belgium to feature a retrospective celebrating his work from the last 20 years. His work displays a "conceptual and poetic minimalism" that is tempered with bright colors to make his minimalist work pop.
The Pierre Charpin retrospective presents his work as practical but playful. The exhibition was deliberately designed to show his pieces as an ensemble as opposed to chronological, stand alone view of his works, allowing for the viewer to imagine these non-traditional designs as a part of a normal household environment.
Some of my favorite items from the Pierre Charpin display include a metal and ceramic lamp, a ‘UFO’ shelf obscured by green walls and a dinner table that functions as a portfolio by displaying some of his sketches.
