In an effort to transform roads into an exciting pedestrian space, the city of Vancouver's VIVA Vancouver program unveiled an installation called 'Urban Reef.' The city closed down certain streets to set up the interactive installation so people could walk more, or engage in other forms of active transportation.
The public plaza consists of an artistically designed seating arrangement that is composed of several pieces that fit together to create an appealing, underwater-inspired shape. The team behind the Urban Reef design won a competition to have their pedestrian space used, coming out on top of 77 other entries. The sculpture invites people to sit, relax and play according to the VIVA Vancouver website. The 800 block of Robson Street will be closed to showcase the piece from July 1st to September 1st.
