In an attempt to curb pedestrian crosswalk accidents, the city of Lubbock in Texas will be installing what it's calling a' High-intensity Activated crossWalK,' or HAWK at a frequented marked crosswalk. HAWK uses beacons to better assist pedestrians across the street by modifying the displays that are seen by people traveling by foot or car.
Prior to being activated by a pedestrian, drivers sitting in traffic will see a dark signal on the crossing sign. When the crosswalk button is pressed, motorists will then see a flashing yellow light that informs the traffic signals are expected to change soon. With this extra warning, pedestrians are directed to cross the street when it is safe to do so.
By making the directions that should be followed by motorists and pedestrians much more clear, there should be fewer accidents as a result of following the prompts given off by traffic lights.
