New Delhi-based studio Matra Architects builds a timber peak roof that boasts a skylight, allowing natural sunrays to seep into an "open-plan interior arranged over stepped levels." Located in the village of Satkhol in India's Nainital district, the timber structure offers sweeping views of the world's highest mountain range.
Naturally, the project was difficult for Matra Architects on account of the uneven and tricky landscape. Nonetheless, the practice is able to create a modern and cozy abode with a pointed peak roof that references the nearby mountains. Matra Architects ensures that it didn't visually obstruct the natural landscape by positioning the lodge "on the lowest terrace on the site." In addition, this provides a more secluded and intimate experience for travelers.
