Self-Combusting Books

The Designer Patrick Oltean Sends Powerful Messages with His Art

Graphic designer Patrick Oltean uses art to make a statement about various humanitarian crises.

The artist creates books and flyers that offer information and powerful statements to represent "victims of oppression, exploitation and discrimination, who were facing unbearable situations." In one of his more notable works, he created a book titled 'Live for nothing, die for something, your call' -- a book that actually ignites the second it is opened. Inside the book there are black and white anti-war and oppression photos and a video reveals the video self-combusting when opened up.

This artwork speaks about the past, the present and the future of the many conflicts that vulnerable populations around the world have faced and are currently facing.
