Anti-Racism Costume Campaigns

The Ohio University STARS Halloween Posters Make a Statement

With Halloween just around the corner, many individuals (myself included) are still struggling to find the perfect costume -- but before you throw together your next monster masterpiece, you might want to check out the powerful anti-racist Ohio University STARS Halloween ads.

Students Teaching Against Racism (STARS), a small, student-run organization with less than 10 members, created these posters to raise awareness during the haunting holiday season about the undercover racism that can occur on October 31. Using the slogan "We're a culture, not a costume," the posters address Halloween outfits that mock or trivialize the cultures of others, or reinforce negative stereotypes. While the individual wearing the get-up might not even be aware of the offensive implications, the feelings of threat and embarrassment for those on the receiving end of the joke are incredibly real and powerful, as these ads show.

Dressing up in your greatest and most gruesome (or glamorous) get-up for October 31 can be a lot of fun, but as the Ohio University STARS Halloween ads show, the fun should be shared with everyone.
