The first large-scale ocean cleanup project sets off from San Francisco. The eco-favorable initative essentially boasts a "U-shaped floating barrier with a 10-foot 'skirt" that is propelled by wind and waves to collect unfriendly materials. The design is being dragged through the Pacific by the Maersk Launcher vessel. The aim is to reach the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which is located halfway between California and Hawaii. This is a highly garbage-concentrated area that is estimated to contain about 1.8 trillion pieces of garbage. The waste has been accumulated in this spot due to the activity of gyres ocean currents.
This project is launched by a Dutch not-for-profit organization, dubbed The Ocean Cleanup. This particular initiative is a test-run and if successful, it will be steadily implemented as a method of cleaning the water.
