Aid-Supporting Beer Halls

Melbourne's Non-Profit Shebeen Bar Has Opened It's Doors

The non-profit Shebeen Bar was originally featured on SocialBusiness.org back in January 2012, when it was busy raising funds in order for it to open. Founded by 20-something ex-investment banker Simon Griffith, Shebeen Bar is the world's first non-profit bar and has now been open for eight weeks, in which Shebeen has drunk Australia out of its Ethiopian, Kenyan, and Laotian beers.

The new bar, located in Melbourne, sells 25 brands from 10 developing countries. The profits from the sale of each drink go toward supporting seven non-profits in the countries that the beers originate.

Beers include Ethiopia's Dashen, Namibia's Windhoek Lager, and South Africa's Boschendal Chenin Blanc, while the non-profits include Room To Read and Mothers2mothers.
