It takes a design like the Non-Destructive Headphones to make you realize how potentially unhealthy the current crop of earbuds and headphones are. Designer Altamash Jiwani developed these aptly named headphones as a way for folks to enjoy mobile music without risking the health of their ears.
The Non-Destructive Headphones take the form of a band placed around the back of the head. The headphones have small speakers that sit above each ear and a small battery placed in the band's center. The idea behind the headset is to keep the ear canal and eardrum healthier by keeping the headphones/earbuds outside. Designers are currently working on a new generation of headphones designed to do less damage to the ear. Non-Destructive Headphones may not go from concept to reality anytime soon, but you may very well see some aspects of Jiwani's design in headphones of the future.
