Quake-Resistant Stadiums

The New UC Berkeley Memorial Stadium Could Withstand a Natural Disaster

It seemed that there was only one reasonable option when it came to considering the future of the UC Berkeley Memorial Stadium. Despite the fact that it sits with a fault line zigzagging right down its middle, the arena was approved to be revamped to preserve the alumni's memories and to participate in making new ones.

The firms of HNTB and STUDIOS Architecture of California worked to rebuild the damaged structure by making it into seven separate pieces. In the event of an earthquake, this allows the whole stadium to comfortably shift up to two feet vertically and six feet horizontally. To top it off, the new UC Berkeley Memorial Stadium flaunts an impressive floating glass box as its press center. Quite deservedly, the project won the 2013 Structural Steel Award.
