The 500,000 passengers who travel through New Delhi Railway Station, the busiest in India, will now be able to enjoy WiFi access on station platforms.
Commuters on any of the station's 16 platforms will be able to enjoy 30 minutes of free WiFi access, after which they will be required to pay up. Scratch cards costing 25 rupees for 30 minutes and 35 rupees for an hour will be made available at 24x7 WiFi helpdesks; the cards will be valid for 24 hours.
The WiFi access project is being implemented by RailTel, a railway public service unit. The project will cost 500,000 rupees, with 160,000 rupees spent annually to operate facilities. The facility will eventually be expanded beyond New Delhi Railway Station to other cities around India early next year.
