The Moving Image Contemporary Art Fair is launching the 'National #Selfie Gallery' as a new installation. The exhibit is a little more sophisticated than the typical duck-face or bathroom mirror selfies found on Facebook; instead, it is a collection of 30-second video clips from artists all over the US and Europe. The assemblage of videos are meant to explore the exhibitionism of the selfie (otherwise known throughout history as 'the self-portrait').
The proliferation of social media and technology has allowed the self-portrait to become a widely used art form. In other words, the practice is no longer reserved for those with superior artistic talent (think Van Gogh;) anyone with a smartphone can snap and share a selfie these days.
Curators Kyle Chayka and Marina Galperina explain, "Self-portraiture is the most democratic creative medium available both as a performative outlet for the social self and an intimate vehicle of personal catharsis, for artists and non-artists alike."
