Book-Filled Staircases

This Narrow Staircase Doubles as a Functional Bookshelf

London-based architect Tamir Addadi recently designed a narrow staircase that doubles as a bookcase. As dwellings become more and more compact, many homeowners are looking for unique ways to maximize what little space they have. This unusual staircase manages to combine functionality with stylish architectural design.

For this particular project, Addadi was asked to convert a loft into a bedroom with an attached study. The architect was able to include additional storage by turning the bookcase into a structural element. The narrow staircase was fitted with vertical elements that were notched for their full depth, while the stair tread was slotted in and then cantilevered out. The clever design helped turn the narrow staircase into a functional bookcase.

Not only does the staircase provide storage, but it also serves as a visual focal point in the space.
