Lebanese architecture firm Najjar & Najjar designed these elegant and eerie conceptual structures, which would be capable of providing shelter as well as generating power. They are also a way for local residents to reclaim the Beirut shore, which has been inundated by the construction of luxury residences in recent years.
The structures are named 'IRIS' because, much like the iris of an eye, the structures can open and close to provide shelter. They can also serve as elevated lookouts for fishermen or anyone who wants to enjoy an elevated view of the water.
The structures can also be connected to ocean buoys which harness the power of waves for electricity.
Najjar & Najjar architects say that IRIS is "an attempt at reresisting the expropriation of Beirut's open coastline."
