This musical staircase combines old world musical class with inspired architecture to create a strange combination. This staircase (and accompanying mezzanine bed) were made of disassembled parts of an old piano.
Tim Vincent-Smith was given two upright pianos from a man who would normally have just burned them. Being an artist, he of course saw the opportunity in the situation. The entire project reminded Tim of a French restaurant where they "kill a cow on the weekend and prepare every part for food. Nose to tail carpentry."
This may not be as grotesque an example but in much the same way as they use that cow Tim was resourceful in his work with this musical staircase. The steps feature piano keys, the first step is the cover of the piano and the entire finish of the piano is smooth mahogany and poplar. Just goes to show that one man's junk is another man's treasure
