A meteor shower is a celestial event where a number of meteors burst into streaks of light as they enter the earth's atmosphere—but rather than waiting for this breathtaking event to occur naturally, a Japanese start-up called ALE (Astro Live Experiences) is developing technology to produce shooting stars on demand.
In 2020, ALE is planning to introduce the world to the first-ever artificial meteor shower in Hiroshima, which will involve two microsatellites that release brightly glowing balls. As part of the project, ALE has plans to launch the first satellite into space via rocket in March 2019, with the second satellite following later in the year.
The satellites are equipped to hold hundreds of balls, which is enough to create up to 30 artificial celestial events. When it comes to looking to the future, ALE also sees the potential for existing satellites in space to be used to create giant shooting stars.
